Job demand–control theory

Perhaps one of the most well-known theoretical models to explain the relationship between work demands and poor emotional and physical health is Karasek’s (1979) DC model. This theory puts forward four different types of jobs related to the level of job demands and job control, and the possible health and well-being outcomes associated with these (Karasek and Theorell, 1990). Figure 7.2 summarises the types of jobs that might result from different combinations of job demands and job control.

The model suggestions the following:

high job demands with low control – these types of jobs are linked to both psychological and physical strain (high-strain jobs);

high demands with high control – these are seen as ‘active’ jobs and are linked to well-being, learning and personal growth;

low demands and high control – these types of jobs are linked to low levels of job strain;

low demands and low control – these are seen as ‘passive’ jobs and are potentially linked to high levels of job strain.
